We are truly excited to bring this landmark study to the region. Latin America remains one of the least represented areas in global genomic research, particularly regarding critically ill patients, where both the genetic diversity and the burden of infectious diseases are substantial. Establishing GenOMICC here represents a unique opportunity to bridge this gap, generate invaluable genomic data, and help uncover biological mechanisms that may differ across populations and influence susceptibility and outcomes in severe infections.

For us, leading the regional coordination through the LIVEN (Latin American Intensive Care Network) has been an inspiring journey. It has enabled us to connect intensive care units, academic institutions, and research groups across multiple countries, creating a collaborative infrastructure capable of conducting high-quality, large-scale genomic studies. GenOMICC has not only strengthened our research capacity but also fostered a shared vision of equitable participation in global science, ensuring that discoveries reflect the true diversity of humanity.

For our team, this study embodies the spirit of collaboration, inclusion, and discovery. It has brought together clinicians, scientists, and patients under a common goal: to better understand the human response to life-threatening infections and to make those insights accessible and relevant to all populations.

We are honoured to represent the Latin American GenOMICC consortium and look forward to expanding this initiative to additional countries in the near future through the LIVEN network.
